How To Tease (Backcomb) Your Hair

Knowing how to tease your hair is an absolute essential for creating the most adored hairstyles, as well as creating volume beyond belief. However, if not done properly, you may end up looking like you just walked off the set of an 80’s music video shoot, and well, that’s not very chic at all, is it? Follow these tips to teasing your locks to ensure that you look 21’s century beautiful and not 80’s badass.

First, you need a tool to start teasing, of course. There are specific teasing combs that are designed to tease your strands without effort, however, not everyone has one of these right at hand, and there are definitely other options so you don’t have to run out to your local beauty store. Round brushes can also be used to tease your hair, but like every hairstyle and method, be sure to test out several brushes and combs to see which works best for the texture of your hair. Once you have your little teasing tool, it’s time to get started!

Again, like every hairstyle, you are going to want to section your hair off into about one inch wide pieces and work with each section, one by one. Teasing your hair in different places can give different looks, so play around with your teasing tactics to see different looks to adore. The most common of teasing looks is to backcomb the crown of your head. Not sure where that is? It's the back top of your head, where you often see people add a "bump" for extra volume. Once you know which hairstyle you want to do, it's time to start teasing your way to voluptuous locks.

Now, don't blink, because you might miss the tutorial. Yes, it's that quick and easy.  There are two ways that you can create the tangles from teasing. The first one is to take a section of your hair and from the end of your strands, pull your comb up your strands to the root. This will cause friction on your locks and create that volume at the roots that you desire. The second method is to start about three inches from your roots, instead of at the end of your strands and comb your hair up to the roots. Both ways work fantastically, but like always, experiment with both methods and all teasing tools to see what gives you the look that you desire. Once you have your teased roots, lightly comb over the top to even out any strays or "birds nests" in your hair.

Teasing, also known as backcombing (for obvious reasons), is the perfect thing to get instant volume that lasts from day to night without having to rock a hairstyle drenched in gel. It adds structure, texture and personality to any and all hair styles. With one simple wash or brush, your teased tangles come out and your hair is back to normal. VOILA! Simple, right?
